What qualities did Sinclair believe a person must have to succeed in Packingtown?
They needed to keep up.
According to the passage, what is the plant owner's main goal?
To make money
What does Sinclair mean when he says, "...there was no place in it where a man counted for anything against a dollar....?"
Money ruled that place.
After the jungle was published the meat-packing industry changed in many ways.
"OSHA's commitment is to provide information to help employers and
employees in the meat packing industry comply with OSHA standards and increase
safety in the workplace.
There are currently no specific standards for the
meatpacking industry."
...or is it this is from the OSHA website here is the link.
"Some workers have been slashed, burned or scarred...
But 100 years later, the industry that produces the meat for America
still faces some of the same tensions and troubles that Sinclair
exposed...
In 1906, there were accusations the meatpacking giants exploited
immigrants, battles over unions and complaints of paltry pay for
hazardous work.
In 2006, the problems persist — though the names have changed. The
eastern Europeans who flocked to Chicago’s bustling stockyards 100 years
ago have been replaced by Mexican and Central American immigrants
chasing their own dreams in the remote reaches of the rural Midwest and
Southeast."

Tenement
Tenement was a close quarters building that many lower class citizens lived in. What is now today's apartment building. It is still the most common word for a multi-occupied building in Scotland. The act that this was defined was "The tenement house act of 1867". It later became fashionable to live in them but they became dangerous [apartments that were dangerous in new york no way]. also there is apparently a band named tenement.

Dealing with the workers
For camp life
Owners
Hiring workers
Impact
Life for the workers was normally bad for them. Once the Chinese workers of a railroad went on strike. It was June 25 that it started and it lasted for about 1 week. The workers just stopped working. The owner ended up taking rations, adding salary, and more. In the end the workers starving got more rations more pay but no paycheck for the month.
